Life's a Stitch

And more recently life’s a creative adventure with some travel thrown in.

I've written a lot about the differences between now and then. How the way we do things has changed, much if it at a much higher cost. Take veterinary care. Old Dr. Burt just retired. At Gracee's last annual check, which was performed for the cost of the shots, he discovered a little cyst on her eyelid. He had Chuck hold her while he snipped it off. She didn't even flinch.

New school vet, annual check-up, wants to do bloodwork and a urine test as part of the routine, She sees another little cyst and informs us it will cost $1000 to remove including the additional bloodwork and the general anesthesia. And by the way, if she's not comfortable with her skills once in progress, she may refer us to a doggie eye specialist. We've found another pet hospital where they were confident it could be accomplished for less than half the price.

Really, I'm not a bad dog mom, but I'm suffering from sticker shock. You see, this past weekend, poor Gracee got really sick. Her digestive tract shut down and she went in for some emergency IV rehydration and a series of barium x-rays. Silly dog is now fully recovered from her licking up potting soil on the deck escapade. $875 bill. We are fortunate in the fact that we still have a small canine health insurance policy that I had been considering cancelling.Who would've thought it would come to this? Much like human health care I have a feeling that hard decisions are made that are difficult to afford.

So here's Gracee, hiding amongst the furniture legs so I can't catch her, not thrilled with having 3cc's of chalky white stuff being squirted down her throat three times a day. She doesn't look too bad from the front end, but the other end didn't fare so well. Does anyone know how to get barium out of dog hair?

I took out my stress in heavy duty knitting. Too heavy, as a matter of fact. The last time I had knitting tendinitis like this was when C was in the hospital for his heart attack.

I’m glad Gracee is O.K. though. Vet bills are horrendously high.

I am glad that cutie is okay.
Oy, I don’t envy you the vet bills. Shall I tell you about my cat’s two cat dental surgeries?

the cost of vet bills is the major reason we don’t have any animals larger than a hamster. I am sorry Grace got poorly but glad she has recovered. She is such a sweetie!

I soooo hear you on choices and vet bills. I have always felt I would sacrifice food and shelter to be able to care for my dogs. Today’s economy and worse yet, today’s vet prices are certainly testing that conviction.

I have started to take Sullivan to Pet Co. for his anuaul shots. They have a clinic and it ends up being $55.00 compared to $375.00 at the vet. well worth waiting in line!

Vet care is unbelievably expensive. We’ve been through five vets in the past four years. They not only charge a fortune, but many of them don’t seem competent. One of them did surgery on our elderly dog, and when she was done (three hours after she said she would be), she tried to charge us three times what she had quoted because it took her so long! All she was doing was removing a broken tooth; I think it was her own incompetence that was at fault. I refused to pay more than the quoted amount and changed vets (again).

I know a wonderful vet on West Broadway, in Vancouver if you are willing to cross the pond to go see him. Another vet (who shall remain nameless) on West 4th wanted to charge me $500 to have a loose tooth removed. I decided I needed a second opinion. Doc on West B said “I can do that right now if you want me to, she’ll yelp once and it will be over”. I really do believe some of these vets take advantage, knowing how much we love our pets. West 4th also told me to have a cyst removed, for $750 and West Broadway said, “Leave it alone. Next time we put her under for something we’ll deal with it.”

    Poor little Gracee.
Vet bills can be outrageous. That’s one reason why our current dog will be our last.

Poor Gracie, and poor you! Vet bills are usually outrageous. As I always say, “there’s no such thing as a free cat!” (oh, they give them to you for free, but then…..) Hope Gracie is feeling lots better soon.

Wow, that was expensive! My daughter has 2 dogs and a cat and I always cringe when she tells me what their care costs.

I hear your pain (and Gracee’s too!). We loved our vet of 20 years, but made the switch this year for that very reason. It seemed like walking in the door cost us at least $500. We have a lovely new vet who is much more reasonable and seems very competent. Having said that, I’m now going to go look at doggie pet insurance!

I took Miles to the vet after he’d come back from his ‘baby-sitter’s” (his old owners) after our summer vacation. $600 later, it turned out to be nothing more than age, increased activity, and too much snacking when no one was looking that caused his bloated stomach and general malaise.
Hope Gracee’s feeling better soon and doesn’t have to take the chalky white stuff much longer.

My favorite neighbors are both Vets and they didn’t have any real advice for getting barium off of a dog, but they have encountered the problem before. By the third bath most of it is usually gone. Plain vinegar helps, but the smell of pickled dog can make the ‘cure’ worse than the condition. Glad to see that she’s doing better though!

Oh dear! Poor Gracee and poor youuuuuuu! 😀 It only gets more expensive as they get older too. Then it’s the “geriatric” blood tests! Gah!
Licking up potting soil, Gracee, really??? Silly pup. xo

Costs are crazy in my local suburban area where all of the vets are strictly small animal doctors. I have taken to driving my little dog 30 miles west to a small town farm vet that literally charges 1/3 of the price. Two hours in the car to save hundreds…totally worth it.

With two aging cats, I can relate. My long time (low cost, conservative in practice) Vet retired. The new younger Vets have raised the prices…. Does it help to think that they too are paying back large school loans? Just when we become comfortable the rules of game seem to be changing.

Oh poor baby dog! It is amazing the difference between older more established professionals then the newer breed. I’m contantly amazed and feel fortnate tha tmy young personal doctor, is of the old-fashioned variety.

Our Dr. Tim is more like your old Dr. Burt. He’s a youngish guy, but a very practical, common sense kind of vet. He rarely recommends doing stuff that really doesn’t need to be done. Bring Gracee on down, I’ll introduce them.
Of course, the yarn shopping we’d do while you were here would sort of offset the vet savings. 😉

dilute Murphy’s Oil Soap with water and wash her bum. It works a treat on Westies! And it is not harsh and leaves them lemony fresh. I am not kidding. It is a secret weapon for getting greasy dirt off white dogs.
