Life's a Stitch

And more recently life’s a creative adventure with some travel thrown in.

Of course it’s about the boy. On his last day of school he stopped by my office announcing that it was time for his yearly summer rebellion. He grabbed a sticky note from my desk and suggested we make a web diagram of his past rebellious behaviour and brainstorm a few more. I told him I thought he needed a larger piece of paper. Here’s what we came up with:

Docu0001

Rebellion is in the centre, everything else stemmed from this topic. The upper left represents piercings, other than ears – a nipple and underneath his tongue. That was a double rebellion when he was 15. The right was about hair colour times six. Various shades of black, pink and red.

The bottom represents rebellion-to-be. Wait a minute, I ask, you forgot your drunken romp through the woods that ended up with 44 stitches to the leg. “Sheer stupidity,”says he. Who’d have thought a diagrammatic discussion around rebellion could feel so good to a mom?

Back to the future. What’s left? Tattoos, of course, and he can’t decide between Margaret Wise Brown’s Runaway Bunny or f-holes on his back, as in the holes you find on a stringed instrument, only smaller than in the picture.

He’s really an OK kid. Typically rebellious, but alas, he has a social conscience. I have nothing to complain about.

Does it still count as rebellion if you check with your mom first?

I’m partial to the Runaway Bunny – it’s a book Willow and I have read together many times.

I can’t pull up the bunnies, so I can’t vote. I’m just curious, however, as to whether the butt crack goes with the tattoo. Eeeeuw.

I think it’s hilarious that he’s consulting Mom about his proposed rebellion! Does that count as true rebellion? Of course, all of Mom’s knitting circle friends will vote for the bunny. I’m sure that will be a huge factor in his decision. As for the f-holes. I’m afraid you probably need a pear shaped figure to get the true effect.

I vote for Runaway Bunny. He obviously got the message that you will always love him (many readings with my daughter). Besides, he hasn’t the hips for a good cello impression.

I see the bunny as more rebellious. And how lucky that he’s got a mom who understands and supports his “rebellion”. That’s why he’s got the social conscience.

OK, I think it’s hilarious that he diagrammed his rebellions. Though I suspect he may have left a few out.
And I’ll be the lone vote so far for the f-holes. Those are actually rather cool.

Oh dear… I can see it coming… Bry and Sky with matching f-holes…. shudder. Just the term f-holes… well… how stupid does that sound coming out of our middle aged mouths? I can hear it now…
“My daughter has a volleyball tattoo… my son has an f-hole.”
I’m imagining explaining that in 20 years time to slightly deaf friends…
“NO! I said my son HAS an f-hole, I didn’t say my son is an f-hole!”

Go to the teaching section of a large book store. There are books on Web diagrams. You can come up with something else in the center of the web to change his pattern of thinking. The goal should be “feeling good about oneself.” Not rebellion. Try many different webs and approaches to the webs. He ma;y be happy with a trip somewhere (like New York) in agreement of not getting body peircings. Yuck.
PS: FIRE ISLND WAS A BLAST.
    Love, Rosie
