Life's a Stitch

And more recently life’s a creative adventure with some travel thrown in.

Last night we met a couple who erroneously identified Ms. Grace as a Westie, not a Scottie, an identity error, in my husband’s family, akin to confusing a Dane for a Swede. No biggie, as far as I’m concerned. However, their Westie story beat any Scottie dog tales I could ever tell you. So, here we go…

Once upon a time there was a little Westie dog. This sweet little pupcake escaped from the house at a most inopportune time. Weeks later she developed a ravenous appetite and her belly appeared enlarged. Fearing the worst, her owners took her to the vet, explaining their theory of a clandestine canine tryst. An x-ray was ordered. A sense of relief filled the room when the vet explained that their poor pup was suffering from false pregnancy. He told them what to expect – the dog would continue to grow bellywise until one day she would return to her pre-pregnant appearance. Well that Westie grew and grew. She appeared as big as a doghouse. People asked when she was due and the owners explained her plight.

In the middle of one night the owners heard a yelp. They entered the room afraid to find their puppy had popped. Instead there was their White West Highland Terrier bedded with a wet black rat. Unable to make sense of the scene, the explanation followed in the form of a second black rat.

Five hours and an equivalent number of false puppies later, they piled the family into the car to pay a visit to their favourite vet. Puppy number six arrived in the car. While under examination in the vet clinic, number seven made its appearance. As they were leaving, the desk clerk mentioned an outstanding bill for an x-ray. "Right," they said, while struggling with their unpredicted pack, "you have a snowball’s chance in hell of collecting on that bill."  On the way home puppy number eight entered the world.

The owners have assured me that every detail is true, can you imagine? Coincidentally, today my sister sent me this photo of my niece and a friend’s Westie, Boogie:

Img_1177I know there’s some knitting content here somewhere. Oh yes, this is my haul from Marilyn’s closing out sale in Bellingham, two skeins of Cherry tree hill sock yarn and two skeins of Zephyr. That store, in the best of times, caused me to go into sensory overload with their huge selection, and I always had difficulty making any purchasing decisions. News for those in the area – a new yarn shop will be opening soon in Barkley Village.

    Hello:
I enjoy reading your blog. I also know what you mean about sensory overload at Marilyn’s. Kind of like too many menu item choices and no idea what you feel like eating!
FYI I have opened a new yarn shop too…in Walnut Grove, Langley. Used to be the old Knit Cafe location. Now called 88 Stitches. It is a work in progress, as I just opened in May and I am still trying to figure it all out.
Hope you drop-in for a visit sometime. I am expecting my Fall yarns to begin arriving in August.

I just had a couple mistake my Schipperkes for Wild Pigs. Oh well, maybe half the world needs glasses. Loved the story about the false pregnancy. Maybe they needed a new vet.

Oh my heavens. Several years ago, while I was posted in Moscow, I was dog-sitting for a friend’s tiny female mutt. While I had her, she went into heat. One night, middle of winter, I took her out on the leash. Somewhere, a dog barked, and the little b*tch jerked her head out of her collar and took off. I chased her across the snow-covered field in my bare feet and bathrobe until she escaped under a fence. The next day, she returned, and I promptly took her to a local vet for some doggy morning-after pills. They worked, sort of. She had only one puppy, but he was almost as big as she was! It worked out well for my friend: she had been wanting another dog, but her husband had refused. There wasn’t much he could do after that.

This sounds so familiar ! When I was young we had a dog who escaped too,my parents weren’t that alarmed because she had had false pregnancies before. Untill one night she gave birth to 1 very large pup ! I loved him dearly untill he went to live with someone else.
They lived closeby so I got to see him every once and a while.

I’m sorry Marilyn’s is closing. I only got there once but I was subsequently able to infect my friend’s husband with STR fever.
My dog gets mistaken for a pony!
She was an unwanted pup until they brought her to our home.

Thanks for another funny story, Li! When I was a little girl, we had a Siamese cat named Julius Caeser. He LOVED turkey. One year at Thanksgiving, my mom gave him several nights of turkey tidbits for dinner. He started getting fat. Then Christmas – same thing, only he got even fatter. I kept telling my mom he looked pregnant. “Impossible” says mom, “he’s a boy and boys can’t have babies.” So, 4 little “surprise” kittens later, we renamed “him” Julia Caesarina. She got spayed and lived a long (and turkey-filled) life.

    Hi,
My name is Mandy and I work for Direction Press. Part of my job is to search blogs to find new & closed yarn shops & needlepoint shops. That is because we have a website, ShopYarn.com where we keep an up-to-date list of yarn and needlepoint shops in the US. We also publish the Knitters’ Needlepointers’ Crocheters’Weavers’ & Spinners’ Travel Guide book.
I am contacting you because you mentioned that the yarn store Marilyn’s is closed and i was wondering if you could provide me with more information regarding that store. Also i noticed that 88 stitches is a new yarn store that opened and i noticed that the owner contacted you i was wondering if you could please provide me with the e-mail or some contact information for the new store so that i could get their information an update it on our website and in our travel guide. Thank you for all your help and time.

I love that Jagger Spun. I’ve been eye-ing some jumper-weight heather for a shawl I want to do. Yummy.
