Life's a Stitch

And more recently life’s a creative adventure with some travel thrown in.

Even if you've never had a migraine, please read this post, but read it to its end. You might have them in the future or know of someone who can benefit from this. I'll try to summarize so it isn't migraine inducing post due to its length. It's basically a series of clues that led to an effective  a not so effective treatment:

  • I've had migraines for over 15 years.
  • Recently I had 22 headaches in 6 weeks; all needing Imitrex and/or Tylenol 3.
  • In preparation for a visit to a neurologist I kept a headache diary and found that only six were classic migraines. The others started with pain on both sides of my temples before zeroing in on the typical one sided migraine.
  • No foods seemed to trigger the headaches, and although dr's kept telling me they were hormone related, it didn't seem cyclical in any way.
  • The two sided pain was similar to headaches I experienced after being treated with traction for a neck injury.
  • When given a guard for teeth grinding, it made the headaches worse.
  • It is different and more complex than TMJ, it's a disorder of the trigeminal nerve.
  • I happened to be at the dentist with an active headache and he had recently taken a course about this FDA approved treatment. I was very doubtful since the night guard was such a disaster, but in desperation, I agreed to try it.
  • I've had one migraine in ten days and I'm cautiously optimistic.
  • The only side effect is that my bite is rather wonky, but my dentist assures me he will address this.

Update: Not such a good update, actually. Fit of the device is crucial. I lost mine and my dentist made a new one. It fits slightly differently and the headaches are back. Unfortunately it can't be adjusted until he returns from vacation.

Another update after a year: It didn't work out well at all. The device changed my bite severely to a point where I had difficulty chewing and even my speech was affected. My jaw felt crooked and the headaches returned. Now, a couple of months after no device at all, things are feeling a little better. I've been to a neurologist, who feels my headaches are related to an old neck injury, and he will be trying Botox for migraines, which apparently has a very successful outcome. Good luck to all you who have arrived here after Googling for a migraine cure.

October 2008 Update – the Botox for migraines is working relatively well, with about a 75% reduction in the number of headaches. My Imitrex works for the remaining few. The Botox lasts about three months and there were no side effects. If you'd like further information, please leave a comment.

Good news! I get maybe two or three a year and I’m not sure they’re classic migraines. I know mine are stress related and if I take Excedrin and do some stress relieving yoga or relaxed breathing I can often head them off. I tried slogging through the article, but didn’t quite make it, but I’m going to refer it to my friend who has migraines quite often. Thanks for sharing it with us!

I’ve had them for nearly 30 years (even remember my very first…) at the rate of 2 or 3 per month (the math there is horrifying). But for some reason (I’m knocking wood like crazy here) I haven’t had one in about 8 months. No clue what’s up. A few sinus-y headaches, but, well… let’s just say my fingers are crossed that my head stays this way.

Migraines sound positively awful. I get one bad headache every month (days three and four of my period, like clockwork), only on the right side of my head, with dizziness and nausea. They don’t respond to Advil or Tylenol, and only go away after the second day. I don’t know it they’re migraines, but I sure don’t like them. I hope your dentist can re-fit your device so that it works for you. It must be absolutely debilitating to have such awful headaches, especially if you don’t know when they’re coming.

Thanks for the migraine tips! My boyfriend gets them periodically and I always feel so bad for him. Also, I love the colors in that scarf! I’m a total blue/green kinda gal. I’d love the pattern…

Good luck with your NTI Li. I have been using one for about 6 – 8 months now and I like it much better than a full mouth guard. It took some getting use to though.

Thanks for sharing the link to this info as I have had debilitating migraines in the past where the doctor pulled me off the Imitrex (my blood pressure had skyrocketed with the migraine and apparently Imitrex is contra-indicated with high BP) and put me on Vicodin – lovely, eh? Anyhoo…they are very infrequent now but I have a co worker I’m going to share this with.
I hope your Dentist returns from vacation soon!
It must be wonderful for you to see all these variations of your pattern and to see how we all enjoy it and want to make it more than once.

Oh, you have my full sympathy about the headaches. I really hope that the new device (once adjusted) brings you more relief.
I have struggled with horrible tension headaches for years and years. I get them a lot less in the last four or five years since I burnt out and gave up doing a lot of high-stress things. And body work…I love body work (chiro, massage, etc), and a dental guard (I tend to get TMJ), and anti-depressants…and…
I loved reading all the comments in response to the nick-names post. Some nicknames are really awful. I would not have wanted to be called lelips though.

This is very interesting! My migraines are associated with sinuses so I’m not sure if the dental thing would work for me. However, I’m glad to hear you’ve gotten some relief!

I hope you find a solution to this Migrane business. I had them cyclically (hormones) for a long time. I started going to the Chirpracter monthly and my migranes have vanished for the most part. I can feel them coming on and I get in right away to the Chiro and that has so far solved the problem 100% of the time. Good luck.

Thanks for the information, I will make a note of it as it seems quite valuable. I’ve only had a migraine once or twice, but lately I seem to be more readily getting extreme headaches which I don’t know if they classify as migraine or not.
That is a beautiful scarf she made!

I am loving your herringbone stitch scarf. As per your blog, would you please email me a copy of the pattern? I will be so grateful! BTW, I have suffered from migraines for years…Imitrex, when it finally came on the market, was a lifesaver 🙂

Oh, I sympathize, I’ve been getting those blasted headaches for 30 years. I’m just hoping they go away with menopause. (Haven’t yet.) I hope the new device works out. Hey, can I get a copy of the Herringbone Rib pattern also? I keep meaning to ask, and keep forgetting! Thanks!

Sorry to hear about your headaches Li: Could it be from some kind if nerve pressure from knitting? You may be tilting your head for long periods of time as you knit and that causes pressure on your vascular system. Maybe you are driving with your seat too far back. Talk to a Chiropracter too. California was gorgeous but freezing at night.

I’ve taken a preventative course of T0pamax and a bloodpressure medication for years-most recently Ver@pamil. While they are somewhat off label uses for both drugs, I’ve had miraculous results.
I’m supposed to wear a nightguard to help with the grinding/TMJ, but I’ve bitten through two and they are an expensive habit!
You might see what your neurologist says about preventative medications!
