Life's a Stitch

And more recently life’s a creative adventure with some travel thrown in.

I have described myself as a packrat. There are things I have difficulty parting with. If I didn’t have it before, I am sure I caught this affliction from my mother-in-law. When she lived on a farm she told us, when she died, to burn down the shed because she was embarrassed about its contents. It contained at least a half century’s worth of egg cartons.

For me it’s boxes. You never know when they’ll come in handy for mailing, storing stuff, or burying the neighbours dead hamster. I can’t blame this on on my MIL as I’ve had this addiction since high school. I worked in gift wrap at Lord and Taylor in New York and it was box heaven. I also held onto boxes that contained fancy stationary or candy. It drives my husband around the bend. Come on, really, in the overall scheme of things what’s the problem with keeping boxes?

I guess I come by it honestly. My father could not throw away a coffee can. He’d paint them and have rows in his workshop, each a different colour, filled with assorted screws and nails. I have fond memories of that rainbow of cans.

Come on, fess up, we all have something. I know Blogless Marsha was saving those heavy cardboard inner rings from Touch Me yarn for awhile. Never know when those might come in handy.

Dsc01857It’s proud mama time – for those Canadian readers, Mount Pleasant, a movie by Ross Weber, is being released this Friday in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal. It’s a small independent film about an actual neighbourhood in Vancouver experiencing not so pleasant issues. Here’s the trailer and a description. The number of ticket sales in the first weekend influences the length of the movie’s run. Now, here the proud mama part – my 16 year old has two lines in this movie and that’s all it takes to say you’ve had a speaking part in a movie and to get your name in the credits.  OK, so one of the lines is only one word, who’s counting? He’s the one with the camera in the party scene. In Vancouver it will be at the Granville Seven. I’ll be there Friday night. And Saturday. And Sunday. Stop by my seat and say hi. I’ll be the one who doesn’t get up when it’s done, knitting my way to the next showing. The things we do for our kids. This is a picture of him, almost a year and four inches of hair ago.

OH! I wish I could see it! Congrats to the movie star! Handsome, isn’t he??
    🙂
I could use one of those boxes right now! I have stuff to mail and no appropriate box. Imagine?

‘Grats on being the mother of an up-and-coming star!
I, too, must confess to being a box collector. I have all my Elann ones for the day when my stash becomes its own store and I need to start selling it off! When I go to MEC I pilfer the recycling bins by the tills for the quality hiking shoe boxes. And I have to buy those cute ones from Daiso — cheap and frickin’ adorable!

    Congratulations to the boy!
Boxes? Sure, there’s one from USPS that is just the right size for a small project and a larger one for sweaters. I can’t go to the USPS store without leaving with a bunch of Priority mail boxes and envelopes!
(I only use the used ones for projects, so don’t yell at me!)

I collect bubble wrap. Never know when you might want to pack something fragile! And now I know where I got my coffee can collecting from! I forgot about the ones Dad would paint and store stuff on his work bench. I use my coffee cans for grease. Can I reserve my copy of the movie when it comes out on DVD now? How exciting for Bryant!

Hey congrats on the movie star son! We’ll be able to say we knew you when. My husband took a bunch of boxes to recycling Saturday and I have to admit to hyperventilating a little. What will I do if I need to mail something? In the past I’ve had a problem with decorative tins – even Altoid boxes give me a little pack rat rush. But I’m getting better only because I live in a small house and I’ve run out of room!

Congrats to the up-and-coming movie star! I packrat just about everything so it’s nearly impossible for me to narrow it down, but if I had to, I’d say books. I can’t throw books away. I was an english major, I re-read my books frequently and parting with them – even to donate them to a library – is excruciating. I’m trying to be better though; they take up an awful lot of room.
I was also wondering if I could get a copy of the Herringbone Rib scarf pattern? It’s beautiful.

How exciting for Bryant and the family. Too bad I can’t see it here. It looks like it has some big name talent in it. Isn’t that actress from the tv show OC (Orange County)?

I’ve got so much “stuff” it’s embarrassing. If only getting rid of it didn’t involve managing to put it in a specific size bag that doesn’t weigh more than a pre-specified amount, carrying it up a curving flight of steps and then down a steep driveway to the curb…

I would love a copy of the herringbone rib scarf pattern. We also adopted a ‘special needs’ Scottie; Archie had been kept outside, day and night (in northern Illinois), for three years. He has a wonderful personality despite that abuse, but he also likes to lick the carpet occasionally.

I just wandered to your blog, sent by Sandy. I enjoyed reading it almost as much as I like your beautiful herringbone scarf pattern. May I please get a copy from you. I don’t know if I’ll have time to do another Red Scarf, but I’m going to try, and I’d love use your pattern. I am also a packrat, but I am trying to unlearn the habit. We just cleaned out two closets and the basement, and the feeling was great! The problem we developed, was that we were staring to run out of room to live in with all the things that we “couldn’t bear to part with”. I think the hardest part for my husband was getting rid of some things that had belonged to his late parents, that he truly was never going to look at again. After it was gone, he said that he really was happy that it had gone to Goodwill, where maybe someone could actually use it.

Ooh I stumbled across another boxer – I too myself keep way to many boxes for just in case. Moving, call me, I can hook you up. I am trying to rid some of my pack rat ways though. I’m pretending I’m moving to Paris. If I’m not willing to pack it – I must get rid of it. Baby steps all the way, but this mental move to Paris really does nothing for the boxes you know – because I will need those for the move 🙂
But what I really came here for is a copy of your Herringbone Rib Scarf pattern. I saw it on Sandy’s blog and it looks divine.

That’s very cool about your son.
Okay on the box front, my dining room was so full of them at one point, when I burned them in the back yard, someone almost called the fire department. Of course I accidentally caught a huge pile on fire when I was trying to contain the stuff in a burn barrel.

Congrats to your son! This must be an exciting time for him and you. I, too, collect boxes. I reuse them to wrap gifts or mail things. In fact, it’s not really Christmas if someone doesn’t get the file folder box (usually with a shirt in it) as a gift. We all laugh about getting the box of file folders before we reveal what is really in that box. It is making its way around the family as it gets gifted from one to another.

Because we have moved a few times, OK A LOT OF TIMES, the boxes I find it hard to part with are moving boxes, I hate spending the money on new moving boxes.
