I am not Ms.Fashionality opting for function over form, nine times out of ten. My favorite shopping spots are LL Bean, Lands End and the clearance racks at Talbot’s. In my best attempt to keep my kids out of therapy, I read all the books and learned never to criticize their weight, hair or clothing. Apparently they never read their version of the same books.

One day, descending the escalator at the Bay, I eyed the most perfect hot pink silk outfit, just right for my daughter’s prom. In our part of Canada, the prom is a family affair, attended by graduates, dates and parents. I brought it home to have it nixed by every member of the house.

I heard four versions of "You are NOT wearing that are you?"

"This is not the problem of a single woman," I grumbled as I exchanged it for the royal blue version.

Recently my husband declared, in a not so diplomatic way, his disdain of one of my tried and true articles of clothing. He told me I needed to throw it out. I told him I was saving it for my next husband. Over Christmas, both my daughters were home. I asked each on for their honest opinion of said item. It’s not bad, Mom, said elder daughter, but I didn’t like that top you wore last night. It’s OK said the younger one, but where did you get those pants you wore last night? What am I supposed to do? The younger piped up that her friend’s parents are not allowed to go clothes shopping by themselves. When I get back to work I’m calling my employee assistance program. I need therapy.

I am not alone!  I just read Super Eggplant’s post about her new dress, described by her husband as looking like something a polygamist’s wife might wear.

Realizing I never posted photos of my cousin’s scarf, here it is, already mailed off, delivered and worn:

I’m learning – the hard way, of course – to never ask Hannah (she’s 14) her opinion on anything I’m wearing.

Living with four males, I know better than to ask their opinion and thankfully, most of them don’t offer!

Ah well! Poor Li. I, too, have lived in a houseful of males and I don’t ask either because I don’t want to know the answer. My husband has accepted (I think) that comfort comes first for me.

I have your solution – borrow a preschool aged boy. I stepped out of my bedroom yesterday in a pair of tired old jeans and my ‘housework’ shirt and my son looked up and said “Mommy, you’re beautiful”. He is definitely getting a pony. =)

    BLECH…..KIDS……What do they know??? LOL!!!
(And just think….one of these days when they are all grown up and have kids on their own they TOO will suffer the clothing opinions of their kids!! Not to mention wonder what in the world YOU were thinking letting them out of the house the way THE wre dressed when they were teenagers!) LOL!!!

    Very pretty pink scarf!
My nickname in the family is “the Lands End/Eddie Bauer/Birkenstock poster child”. Why bother going shopping when you can buy the same style (that you know fits) in five different colors? And have your cute UPS man bring it to the door?

That is one of the prettiest scarves I have seen. How nice of you to make that for your cousin. I hope it brings her quick healing. I love Marshalls, TJ Max and this little boutique called Fox’s that has the tags clipped out of many of their clothes.

HeeHee! This maybe could be put to work to your advantage…what would the dear ones be willing to do to entice you into NOT wearing these outfits that offend their delicate fashion senses? The laundry for a week? Inside and outside cleaning of your car? A day at the spa? Gift certificate to your favorite lys?
The scarf is luscious. Lucky cousin!

I was once told that the sweater I was wearing looked like a table cloth. My youngest (a 13 yr old) prefers to walk a few paces ahead or behind me – actually she prefers to pretend she’s an orphan. No mother, no father, no siblings. Families – sigh!

My Youngest once cried and said she wanted her Old Mommy back when I got my hair darkened, basically went back to my natural color. They tend to not say much, but they are only 9 and 12, the 12 year old being a tomboy. But the 9 year old is a fashionista! So watch out, I will be getting it soon.

I haven’t hit that point yet because my kids are too young and my husband is fairly indifferent (One thing I have to thank his three sisters for is their completely turning him off from any interest in discussing women’s hair, clothing, etc. . . ). However, I’ve got my answer to that all ready for when the time comes with my kids. . . if they don’t like the clothing that I pick out for myself, I will be more than happy to find myself a stylist and/or personal shopper and spend all of the college/retirement/etc money on my clothing. Because who cares if we’re all living in a tent eating cat food as long as I have nice clothes!

I never ask my kids – both teen boys – I don’t like their mode of dress and they don’t notice mine! 🙂
I saw Sandy’s beautiful herringbone scarf and would love to make one of my own. Would you, please, share your pattern with me?
    Thanks!

I also come via Sandy’s blog, and would also love to have your herringbone rib scarf pattern.
I only ask my teenage daughter’s opinion if we are shopping together, and then it is mostly her colour sense that I value, not her fashion sense ;-).
Anyway, I’m very pleased to have found yet another Canadian knitblogger. Go us!

    Hi there–
Another visitor by way of Sandy’s blog. I love all the scarves in your gallery. This pattern really shows off the multi-colored yarns beautifully. May I have a copy of the pattern too?
    Thanks so much.

PS If your family could see what I am wearing right now as I drink my morning coffee in front of the computer, they would never speak critically of your outfits again (they’d just sign in gratitude that you don’t own an Elmer Fudd hat).

Hi, Li! Kudos to you for running a TV-free household. I found your blog via a link from Sandy’s Knitting. I’d love to make the herringbone rib scarf you designed, if you would share the pattern with me. Thanks! It’s great to find a scarf pattern that has an attractive front and back. BTW, I just read and enjoyed all your January posts, so I’m adding your blog to my reading list in Bloglines.

I found a link to your blog for a quick Herringbone scarf. Thanks for the pattern, I am off to find it.

Thanks. Love the pink scarf and the cute sheep.

I was so happy to find your blog and find another Canadian knitter! I’ve added your blog to my favourites list.
I live on the north shore of Lake Erie in southern Ontario. I’d love to be able to donate one of your scarves to the Port Dover theatre for our fund raising — would you send me the pattern for that cause?
    Keep knitting, Charlotte

I saw your scarf on Sandy’s blog today. It looks lovely and I’d love a copy of your pattern! We just sent off Red Scarves from our guild, but I can start now for next year and have them stockpiled for shipping time. I have 16 year old triplets, 2 boys & a girl. Thankfully, the girl’s favorite store is Dick’s Sporting Goods, much like Beans & LE….yes, they are all learning to drive!

I am looking so much forward to be able to watch Bryant’s movie. Unfortunately I am pretty sure it won’t be shown in Denmark but maybe you would have a copy at home???
