Life's a Stitch

And more recently life’s a creative adventure with some travel thrown in.

Two weeks until the wedding and we had an unwanted guest. Chuck went out at midnight to turn off the sprinkler, leaving the front door open. In walked the guest, leaving his calling card. A skunk sprayed the inside of our house. This is not like your dog getting sprayed, this was a direct hit on the carpet, ceiling, walls, lighting fixtures, anything in a 30 foot radius. You can’t imagine the stench – skunk mixed with burning rubber and strong garlic; only made worse by the fact that insurance doesn’t cover damage by vermin. Did I mention that we spent $400 on carpet cleaning just last week?

A couple of skunk facts: tomato juice only masks the scent temporarily and the chemical nature of skunk spray gives it a time release factor. We’ve done it all – the combinations of peroxide, bleach, garden lime, vinegar, and mint leaves. Febreze (what a joke), Downey, Windex, Shout and Oxyclean. Pressure washing, scrub brushing and painting over. It’s lessened a bit, but will take months to dissipate.

Thank goodness I had put Elina’s wedding dress back in the garment bag and that my knitting and yarn were upstairs in a closed off room.

A sweeter smelling part of my life, how about this single stem of half a dozen roses from our garden? Along with the gardener:

oooh. that sucks. I’m sorry – i just don’t know what else to say. Wow. Now there’s a wedding story 🙂 I shared your story with my husband – he’s just as floored by it.
Only the great horned owl eats skunk (so DH says).
At least the roses are pretty!

That’s horrible!!! I’d suggest Nature’s Miracle – most dog people I know use it for “accidents”, but you’ve already mentioned an enzymatic cleaner. Not to mention, it was no accident – damn critter did that on purpose! My heart goes out to you! I’m so sensitive to odors – can’t imagine what that’s like in real life.

OMG – I can’t imagine. A long time ago, our dog and my brother got sprayed – we kept the dog outside for a while. I forgot how we got the smell of my brother.

OH NO!!! Just reading your post brought back the memories of that horrible stench in our house a few months ago. There are just a ridiculous number of skunks on the North Shore this year, aren’t there. I’m so sorry to hear what happened!!

OMG! I remember how awful it was when Frosty (pictured on my blog) got skunked about seven years ago. I can’t imagine how dreadful it must be to have it happen to your HOUSE!

Oh Lord! I can’t imagine. I hate the smell of skunk from a distance so I can’t imagine what it is like right there and personal. Hope the smell goes away sooner than you think.

I’ve heard that placing charcoal in containers around your house will help the odor to dissapate faster. The charcoal absorbes the smell.
