Life's a Stitch

And more recently life’s a creative adventure with some travel thrown in.

I’m hooked, or more appropriately in weaving speak, I’m warped. The weaving class was a success, from the shop owner’s point of view. I ordered a tabletop rigid heddle loom, two books and an extra reed. One hit was all it took to create a serious addiction, thanks to author/designer/teacher Rowena Hart. In a three hour time frame, we did everything worth doing – we shopped, we learned and we completed a good sized scarf. It’s colour and texture combined with speed and economy. Seriously, you can weave beautiful scarves with less than half the yarn and a third of the time of knitting. Don’t worry, I’m not selling out. It is a more limited medium than our beloved two sticks, but a woman can have two loves, can’t she? Here is the class in progress:

Rowena teaches on a "Knitter’s Loom," so called because of its portability which appeals to knitters. The maximum weavable width is 12". I went with a table loom with a maximum weaving width of 24". Here I am with Rowena and the rest of the graduates:

I guess we’re a pretty tolerant bunch and we’ll forgive you for cheating on us if your promise to come back!

I’ve been dying to take a weaving class myself – my LYS teaches everything from weaving small projects to full size traditional Navajo rugs. They also rent loom space, which is a nice option for some of the larger looms. I haven’t taken a class yet because the last thing I need is another excuse to buy more fiber 🙂

Now that looks fun! Did you make the scarf you have on on the loom? It’s pretty!

Ah, that looks like so much fun!! We had a toy loom when the kids were younger, but back then all I thought was crochet. What a nice gathering! Anyway, fiber stuff is fiber stuff!

The loom looks very interesting. I listened to the CBC knitting show, and heard about the class. I really couldn’t picture it but now I can, thanks to your pictures. Have fun with it!

Fidelity is for marriage. Unlike the number of husbands you’re allowed, you can have as many fiber-related hobbies as your home will hold. And there is always the storage-unit option.

So many people are being lured in by those new looms. I have the old style RH loom. How did you find the extra features of the knitter’s loom, such as the weaving sticks?

Just gorgeous – all of them. Wish I had room for a loom, but my apartment won’t hold another thing!

Great Li. That scarf is one of your prettiest that you knit.

Your scarf turned out great, I absolutely love the colorline! As you mentioned your class lasted for 3 hours, I wonder how long it took you to complete the scarf?

Oh no! Don’t tell me this. I have always wanted to learn how to weave and there is a Heddle session coming up in April at a not so local Fleece Fair we attend. Must resist the lure!!! Gorgeous scarves.

Welcome to the world of the REALLY fiber addicted. I have a 24″ rigid heddle loom (which I primarily bought for scarves, so I think I will sell it on e-bay since I got the new knitters loom), I have an Ashford 8 harness table loom, which I love, an Ashford Traveler spinning wheel which keeps calling me to use her, and of course a gazillion knitting projects! Sigh. I will never be bored! and that doesn’t even touch the piles of books I want to read! LOL Your group looks like so much fun!
