I’ve always threatened to do the Christmas hype biannually. Do shopping, lights, tree thing every other year and celebrate what Christmas really is in between. That’s happening this year, albeit not exactly intentionally. With further complications related to my knee reconstruction resulting in hopefully temporary, crummy chronic mostly night time pain (read little to no sleep), things are being scaled down considerably this year. Although it’s what I always wanted to do, I feel a twinge of sadness now and then. Right now it’s nice, though. Chuck is doing his Christmas baking listening to mellow, jazzy Christmas music and I’m blogging in bed.

This knee surgery recovery period has allowed me a lot of time vegging in front of the TV. We don’t have cable, don’t get any reception without cable, so I resorted to movie rentals. Here is my list in order of how I liked them:

#11 Respiro – a depressing Italian movie

#10 40 Year Old Virgin – stupid and stupider

# 9 I Heart Huckabees – maybe I was on too many pain pills at the time – really hard to follow

#8 Napoleon Dynamite – too slow, but the lack of filthy language, drugs and lewd activity were much appreciated. You don’t need that stuff to make a good story

#7 Rushmore – I could take it or leave it

#6 Meet the Fockers – a barrel of laughs when I needed it

#5 Rare Birds –  low budget Canadian film, starring William Hurt, slow moving at first, but an engaging story. Critics compared the style to waking Ned Devine.

#4 Snow Walker – a touching Farley Mowatt story, starring a gifted 19 yr old Inuit actress

#3 Six Feet Under, Second Season – after watching 11 of the episodes I was dreaming that the characters were part of my life

#2 Finding Neverland – a deluge of tears when I needed them

#1 Room to Rent – light hearted British film with a good story

Dsc01503On the knitting front here is a last minute gift for someone who may be reading my blog. It’s made from Granbia, a soft self striping Japanese yarn, nearly impossible to find in North America. It’s an adaptation of the child’s Rainbow Scarf from Last Minute gifts (how appropriate). Link to the patten is on my sidebar.

I’ve been trying to watch seasons of TV shows that I hadn’t been able to see before and it’s very easy to get burned out when you watch a bunch together at once.
My favorite line in #7: Gimme some tots!!

Wish I could show up with a stack of movies and my knitting in tow. We could sit and gab and watch movies and maybe you’d forget you’re hurting for a bit. I do like the slow down thing, though. My husband and I have slowly, over the years, pared down Christmas to a level that we feel is not insane. Of course, that doesn’t always keep me from feeling I should have done more, but you know what – no one ever complains but instead seems to feel “This was the best Christmas ever!” It’s all in attitude. I wish for you a peaceful Christmas and a New Year filled with recovery and new vitality! And of course, lots of yarn.

My husband and I rented Napoleon Dynamite because our friends went on and on about how wonderful and great it was. We kept waiting and waiting for it to get wonderful, I agree the no profanity etc was nice for a change, but oh my goodness I will never get that hour plus back.

I have to just tell you that I worked on “The 40 Year Old Virgin” and by and large the crew thought it was going to be a piece of crap. When I went to the screening I thought “Wow, this is way worse than I thought. Why on earth would anyone think this is funny?” And then when it got all these rave reviews and made the producers rich I was gobsmacked. If that’s what passes for funny these days I’m worse off than I thought. I’m just glad I’m not the only one.

We LOVE “Napoleon Dynamite” at this house! We bought the DVD. My kids and I think that Napolean is just like my husband, so it is even funnier to us. I now emulate Pedro when talking to my irritable husband. One word answers are best sometimes… I hope you get some rest soon. I have been sick since the end of November, and haven’t done a thing for Christmas, except take the turkey out of the freezer to thaw. And we even have a birthday coming up on Christmas Eve to celebrate as well (my daughter’s).

Hi Li…I am so behind in my blog reading, because I too, had some major surgery the week before Thanksgiving. I’m so sorry you are holed up, but, after the slug of anesthesia wears off, you can get alot of knitting accomplished! I do hope your recovery goes well…might I recommend some good old classics for in bed viewing?
