Life's a Stitch

And more recently life’s a creative adventure with some travel thrown in.

How much yarn will your vacuum eat from the time it take its first bite until you flick the off switch?

Oh about four and a half grams, enough for a third of a wedge of the Free and Easy Pie Shaped Shawl. Luckily it sucked down yarn from the skein end, just like an endless piece of spaghetti, not touching the already knitted portion.

About this, the second F&EPSS I'm making with the same yarn, but in stockinette rather than garter stitch, I think the colour definition is better in the second, but it suffers from stockinette roll:

Since this time I elected to start with a provisional cast on, maybe I can add some weight to that end with some sort of sawtooth edge to mirror the bottom. Hopefully that will encourage it to straighten out.

Next time? I think I'll stick to the garter stitch version. What do you think?

I don’t want to even imagine a vacuum cleaner and yarn ends in the same thought bubble. I think my heart, stomach and throat all would have been in a terrible lurch at that moment.
OR you could just pick up the stitches and just do a garter stitch band, even just 3-5 stitches would probably take care of the roll. Good Luck.

Although the color definition does seem better with the stockinette, I think the garter stitch gives it a softer, more ethereal look. However, a sawtooth edge would look really pretty too. The vacuum cleaner story just gives me the chills – especially with a yarn that is no longer available!

As soon as I read your post I could hear my mom’s voice echoing from somewhere in my childhood memories “Well, if it was so important to you what was it DOING on the FLOOR?” (you can substitute ‘floor’ with any other convenient location) It wasn’t helpful or consoling then, and it isn’t now either, but I’m sharing anyways.
Maybe the stockinette one will stay flat with some quality blocking time? They’re both lovely 🙂

Look at the scallopy edge! I like them both. Would it work to do a bit of both and highlight the pie wedges?

Knowing that I hate garter, I would say you got this one right! But the roll does make for tricky solutions. I like the idea of a sawtooth edge. Either way, they are both lovely.

Hi – I recently found your lovely herringbone rib scarf pattern, and was commenting to see if I could get a copy of the pattern. Thank you!

garter stich next time. You ask why I might know this since I am your basic knit a row purl a row? I had the same problem with the camo scraf I was making ARi. You should see it. He calls it a snake snuggie. A friend at the kids soccer game showed me the garter stich. It’s now the 3rd stich I know! Woo! Woo!

Not the yarn-eating vacuum; I hate when that happens!
    I like the garter version.

I think putting an edge on it will make it lie flat. I hope so anyway.
Bad, bad vacuum. Another reason not to turn mine on.

Funny! I have had this happen too I have an upright vacuum with a bristle bar and the yarn will just roll itself up on it.
