Life's a Stitch

And more recently life’s a creative adventure with some travel thrown in.

In my younger years I was one of those sun reflector, baby oil and iodine sun worshipers. Now I’m paying for it. Recently I had nine moles removed with more in my future. All were OK, but I feel like Swiss Cheese.

The subject matter for the mini-columns I write in our local paper often come from personal experience. So here’s the latest, right in time for unprecedented sunshine and heat in British Columbia:

The scoop on skin cancer:

The Canadian Dermatological Association reports that teens are being diagnosed with a skin cancer typically seen in people over 50,

  • There is no such thing as a healthy tan.
  • Sun exposure is responsible for 90% of all skin cancers.
  • Any sunburn can cause irreversible damage.
  • Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world.
  • Peeling is the body’s method of getting rid of damaged skin.
  • Sunscreen should be applied thirty minutes prior to sun exposure,
  • There are no safe ultraviolet rays, a form of radiation that penetrates the skin.
  • When treated early, most skin cancers are curable. Melanoma is responsible for 75% of skin cancer deaths and its incidence has increased 1800%  since 1930.
  • Avoid sun exposure especially between 10:00am and 4:00 pm.
  • SPF 30 sunscreen still allows exposure to 3.3% of harmful UV-B rays,

This shawl won’t keep the sun out, but it will keep Cousin Lena warm at her daughter’s late September wedding in Denmark:

Lovely shawl! And a very appropriate topic. I am a fair-skinned redhead with two fair-skinned kids, and we bathe in sunscreen every morning. That didn’t stop me from getting fried at the water park yesterday. (I was wearing SPF 55 and reapplied twice in four hours. What’s a pale-face to do?) I hope the swiss cheese heals up quickly and neatly. My mom has to have spots removed all the time (damn that red hair), even though she has never spent time in the sun. I expect it’s in my future as well.

Another reason for staying out of the sun – premature aging! I’ve avoided the sun most of my life (just don’t like it, plus I burn easily) and I’m almost 60, but look a lot younger. For years I felt self conscious about my pale skin, but recently realized that that makes about as much sense as a black person being ashamed of their skin. God made me a fair skinned blond and I should be proud of it!

It’s so hard to dispel that myth of the “healthy” tan! The shawl is beautiful and I love the picture in front of the hydrangea.

The shawl is Beautiful! Can’t wait till my daughter gets married. No I take that back. She needs to wait since she is only 12. I don’t want her to grow up too fast! A healthy tan comes in a bottle now a days. No more orange streaks from that fake tan stuff we had years ago . Now what was that called? I am so totally losing my memory but not the memory of the Ban de Soli orange gel stuff Mom used to slapped on us in Puerto Rico. I still can smell it. I loved that stuff! I can hear the song now…….Ban de Sole for that San Tropez tan.

Oh I totally get it!!! I used to use SPF 4 to get my base tan and then switch to SPF oil to get my deep tan. Well deep for me. I’m fair skinned and what takes me weeks to get would take my girlfriend a day to get. When I was 22 I was diagnosed with melanoma and thankfully we got it EARLY! Almost 20 years later and here I am! Its hard not to get color when you live in FL, but I am proud to say that my kids have never had a burn!

I used to do the iodine and baby oil too. Ugh. Not too many people know what I’m talking about if I mention that. Boy that’s one of many things I wish I could take back.
    Very pretty shawl!

Got your e-mail. Looking forward to seeing you. Love the shawl on Lina and also the photo of her with the blue flowers in the background highlighting the shawl. She looks wonderful in it and you have knit it with love. (It is a Leave It to Beaver House/Home you have out there in BC.)
I remember you and Maura with the aluminum reflectors and baby oil on your lunch breaks in high school getting tan for the prom. (I didn’t, Ha Ha.)

Wow. That scarf is heavenly. How much our attitudes to the sun have changed! When I was at school we used to slide our skirt hems up as high as decent and sunbake any chance we had – we thoughtt the only reason to use sunscreen was to avoid burning (not longterm damage). Compare this to My daughter who is 6 – at school (same at preschool) they have a “no hat, no play” policy about outdoor play, and they all must carry sunscreen in their bags (and use it). She doesn’t complain about the hassle of it because she has always had to do it as part of her day. Here in Australia we have had really strong and constant media campaigns encouraging people to take care in the sun (such as the “slip, slop, slap” slogan – slip on a shirt, slop on some sunscreen, slap on a hat.) Among older Australians, like my poor redheaded father, there is a terrible amount of skincancer, but hopefully the levels are dropping in my generation, and will be even lower for my daughters generation, who have been looking after themselves properly! Mind you, unlike me, my daughter has beautiful olive skin – she doesn’t need a tan to glow!
