Life's a Stitch

And more recently life’s a creative adventure with some travel thrown in.

There has been a thread winding its way though the blogs where women talk of their husband’s disdain for one of her outfits. In her January 12th post, Super Eggplant had the dress her guy described as appropriate for a polygamist’s wife. My dear Chuck hates my LL Bean sundresses, which he claims fit me like a sack. I told him I will put them away for my next husband. Now Lynne‘s man is in on the act. Her kimono style top was described by him only as "interesting." I empathetically commented on her blog and she wrote to me saying the only outfit a man truly understands is naked. Can you imagine all the google hits I’m going to get with the words man and naked in the same sentence?

That reminded me of a story that gives credence to her theory. I had a friend who tried on a leather skirt. She asked her husband his opinion. He said, "It doesn’t matter. It’s not going to stay on that long."

Img_1020 Img_1017On to knitting. Meet my Print O’ the Wave, a free pattern from Eunny, in Seasilk in the ivory colourway. This is my current portable project as opposed to Marina, which requires more than one knitting bag and is my stay at home project.

I ordered the yarn on line. All I can figure is that I got the last two skeins. I know that hand dyed yarn has inconsistencies, but why else would they send two completely different shades of the same yarn? This photo doesn’t really illustrate how little they have in common. I was initially concerned as the darker one looked like the ivory one, having survived a diet coke spill. If I wanted that colour I could have handled a spill all on my own. Now that I’ve alternated the skeins, the difference gives it a fair bit of depth and I’m actually appreciating it.

This project would make a lovely wedding shawl, but with no wedding plans this year, thank goodness, I told Chuck I’d wear it for our 25 anniversary in December. With clothes on underneath, of course.

Did you just quote my husband? He too, has no appreciation for my clothing. But he has learned to praise the hand knits I wear! See, you can teach an old dog new tricks.
I lust for that lace pattern. I don’t need any more lusts in my life. I don’t have enough time for the ones I already have yarn for!

One of the ladies in our office “of a certain age” was bemoaning the fact that she had no idea what to get her husband for his birthday. I told her, “Show up naked and bring food”. The next morning she confirmed that this was a good idea! He was very pleased with his present.

Li: What a lovely pattern. It looks so elegant. It will look nice on you for your anniversary. The other day I bought a turquois outfit with a crochet top in brown and beige that looked like southerwestern necklace on the top. It had matching cropped pants with the same trim on the bottom. As my husband crossed his arms his comment was, “I had no idea we were retired and living Florida yet!” He was right. Back it went. It was a nice outfit but the cotton was so heavy. His other comment for outfits that are too matchy, matchy are…. He starts telling me I look like Bea Arthur from the TV show the Golden Girls. I don’t know if you ever remember it since you are not a TV watcher.

I don’t know, clothes off underneath might make it much more anniversaryish. What’s the line from Fried Green Tomatoes, to spice up the marriage come to the door wearing nothing but wrapped in cellophane. I think the shawl would have a much nicer effect.
My husband feels the same way about lingerie as the man felt about the black leather skirt.

My husband can’t tell the difference between flannel and nakedness. Hrrrummmph. So, where are we going/meeting for your 25th anniversary? (provided, of course, I don’t have to see you naked again.)

    love your knitting!
LOL about the nakedness. i have a friend who was shopping for nighties and the like and her DH was there and she asked him what he thought of one and he took it and threw it on the floor and said “looks good to me” LOL b/c that’s where it will be if she buys it. so she didn’t and just opted for the whole nakedness. LOL MEN??

Really pretty scarf that will be. I’ve heard that seasilk is a truly lovely experience to knit with.
Can I have a copy of the Herringbone Rib pattern?

I think many men have the same philosophy about clothing, or the lack thereof.
Your Print of the Wave is off to a beautiful start.

How timely. My husband, a philosophy professor, now uses these little awful linguistic moments in our marriage as “teachable moments” for his students. Just yesterday, he was telling his intro to philosophy kids (in a discussion of artificial intelligence, which segued into the subtelties and complexities of word choice), about how Big Blue (nor, it seems, my sweetie) could be programmed to realize that when faced with the question, “does this look okay,” posed by a woman in a ballgown, the proper response is never, ever, ever “it looks fine.”

I think that the male response to clothes and nekkidness and the like is genetically programmed in. My neighbors (who have young boys) and I were having a big laugh over the boys’ obsession with their own nakedness, especially in public. Men! Can’t live with them, can’t shoot them, can’t make them take an interest in our clothing!

Great lace. I have that on my list for an October birthday. I ordered the wool in January and no response. I think I have freedom to go looking elsewhere.

You definitely are making a silk shawl from a sow’s ear! What a gorgeous shawl that will be! Congratulations on your 25th, we are having our 30th this year. I love your herringbone rib scarf, and the gallery of all that others have made. You have created a geat deal of knitted beauty. I would love to have the pattern so that I can join in. Thanks!

“I told him I will put them away for my next husband.”
That just made me almost spit cornflakes all over the keyboard.
I would not have been as gracious about the mismatched skeins as you are. For that price, the colors should be more consistent. Your solution is working beautifully.
